Dear Councillor

SUBJECT: Please support the CEE Bill

cc My MP

This email is being sent on my behalf by the Shropshire CEE Bill Alliance. I am writing to you because I am concerned about the climate emergency.

In January over a hundred international scientists warned that the planet is facing “a ghastly future of mass extinction, declining health, and climate-disruption upheavals”. They believe that the world has not grasped the urgency of the biodiversity and climate crises and that ignorance and inaction are the two biggest barriers to saving us from catastrophe (source).

At present the UK government intends to wait three decades before reaching net zero in 2050. This does not reflect the seriousness of the crisis.

Unless the world acts rapidly to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the 1.5C goal of the Paris Agreement will slip out of reach in a few years. Once the 1.5C threshold is crossed, we will not be able to regain it. Beyond it lies climate catastrophe.

I believe that the Climate & Ecological Emergency (CEE) Bill, drafted by scientists, lawyers and campaigners, is the best way for the UK to address the crisis.

The CEE bill will ensure that

  • our entire carbon footprint is taken into account, including all of the emissions linked to the production and transport of goods from overseas that we consume in the UK.

  • we use natural solutions, instead of depending on unproven Negative Emissions Technology (NETs) that may not work at scale and offer a false sense of reassurance.

  • we focus on nature as much as climate, protecting and conserving habitats and species in the UK.

  • we give citizens a say in how we move forward, building on the success of the UK’s Climate Assembly.

The bill currently has the cross-party support of over 90 MPs and will have a second reading on 27 March. Meanwhile, councils across the UK are passing motions in support of it.

I am writing to you as my councillor because I would like Shropshire Council to recognise the seriousness of the emergency and the need for rapid action. Shropshire is already feeling the effects of the emergency from record flooding to soil erosion and biodiversity loss.

While individuals we can do our bit to reduce the effect on the planet, it is council and national government who can do the most to safeguard our future.

Please support the CEE bill motion that will be tabled at Shropshire Council in February.

This issue matters to me and it will impact on how I vote in the upcoming elections.

Thank you for your time.
